III. Summary of 2006 to 2019 19
(Note: Part I of our club's history covers the first 30 years (1960 - 1990) and is reprinted from the July-August 1990 issue of The Ah-000-Gah Bulletin. Part II updates our history through our 45th Anniversary in 2005.)
The latest update covers the history from 2006 to 2019 and the additions are scattered throughout the document. They can be identified easily because they are in bold and italicize type.
THE FIRST 30 YEARS
The following is an updated history of the Mohican Model A Ford Club as it celebrates its 30th anniversary year (July 4, 1960 - July 4, 1990).
The editor dedicates this history to all the members – past and present - of the Mohican Model A Ford Club.
For some these pages will be a nostalgic journey down memory lane. For all they serve as a reminder that hard work, leader-ship, perseverance and dedicated members have made this club the solid and worthwhile organization it is today. We look forward to the next 30.
A LOOK BACK THROUGH 30 YEARS
Back in the days when you could fill up your 11 gallon tank for under $3.00 and buy a good running unrestored "A" for a couple hundred bucks, four men held a meeting in Fly Creek, N.Y. to discuss the formation of a club for Model A Ford enthusiasts. Out of this July 4,1960 meeting (attended by Doug Pomeroy, Roy Bemis, Clem Gulianelli and Peter Winnewisser) came the beginning of the Mohican Model A Ford Club.
This committee sent letters to all the known Model A owners in the Central New York area asking them to meet at the Hamilton Jamboree Car Show the last weekend in July. Fourteen families signed up at the Jamboree and indicated interest in forming a club.
On August 14, 1980 the first formal club meeting was held at Doug Pomeroy’s home in Fly Creek. Nine families attended this picnic and a secretary-treasurer (Peter Winnewisser) was chosen to conduct the business of the club until the formal election of officers later in the year.
Small in number, but big in ideas, the club sponsored its first Model A meet, parts swap and gymkhana in the parking lot at St. Mary's Church, Rome, N.Y. during October. Eighteen Model A 'owners, 13 Model A's and one "T," plus about 100 visitors attended. This event was a milestone for the new club and set the stage for an annual trophy meet.
In November I960, 13 members attended the club's first business meeting in Cooperstown, N.Y. Dues were set at $2.00 and the first slate of officers was elected:
President Doug Pomeroy; Vice-President William Tanner; Secretary/Treasurer Peter Winnewisser.
In December the Model A Ford Club of America granted official recognition to the club by accepting it as a chapter. (In 1978 we became a chapter of the Model A Restorer's Club.)
The first annual Trophy Meet was held on October 8,1961 in the St. Mary's parking lot. This was attended by 13 out of 21 members who displayed 12 Model A's and competed for the four awards.
Trophy meets in 1962 and 1963 were held at the same location. In 1964 we moved this event to Beck's Grove near Rome and the following year, at the instigation of Wally Towne, to the Oneida County Airport where we were to remain through 1969.
Between 1965 and 1969 we continued the policy of an "All Ford Show" with only one "Special Interest" class and, consequently, experienced only a slow growth in the number of cars and flea marked spaces. In 1966 there were 17 cars and by 1969 this number had risen to 37 and 12 flea market vendors.
By 1970 we had grown to 58 families including some who did not own Model A Fords. Under the leadership of President Greg Sgroi, we moved the annual trophy meet to the Canastota Airport and opened it up to all antique cars.
This, along with the support of Cark Petroleum Company and other sponsors, really helped our annual event to blossom. We were rewarded by a fine turnout of 105 cars. The show was to remain at the Airport through 1973 when we had our largest turnout to date (190 cars).
Wampsville
The move to our present show location, the Wampsville Fireman's Field, was made in 1974 with Clint Cummings as President and Peter Shay as Show Chairman. Almost 200 cars were present that day and the flea market registered 66 vendors.
Our 1979 show registered 222 cars and 190 flea market vendors. In 1979, for the first time, we excluded the cars of club members from the judging. Last year (1989) we registered 550 cars, 54 cars for sale and 441 flea market spaces. Also in 1989 we began the policy of parking in class and judging only pre-registered cars.
The AH-000-GAH BULLETIN, our club publication was distributed for the first time in 1966 in a one or two page mimeograph format. In 1978 this was changed to a 12-page printed newsletter with photos and ads. The editor of the Bulletin since its inception has been Peter Winnewisser assisted since 1972 by Claire Winnewisser.
CLUB GROWTH
Our club has grown steadily in size. In I960 we numbered 14 families, in 1970 there were 58 and in 1980-133. At present we have 178 families. In 1986 we began a two-tier membership structure for our club. "Active" members attend at least four club-sponsored functions a year. All others are "Associate" members.
In 1967 the club's growth necessitated the formation of a Board of Directors consisting of the four officers, four elected directors, the bulletin editor and chapter coordinator. The number of elected directors was later changed to eight. In 1983 a Program Chairperson was appointed. Filling this office to date has been Laverne Montalbano.
In 1989 we separated the Show Chairman's job from the office of Vice-President. The Board appointed a Show Chairman and an Assistant Show Chairman. Length of office is by mutual agreement.
Our first Chapter Coordinator, Mel Lea, was appointed in 1968 and served in that office until 1975 when Wally Towne succeeded him. Wally remained in that office until 1986 when our present coordinator, Sondra Roberts, took over.
TOURS
Touring has been an integral part of our club program since the beginning. Until the 1970s our tours were one-day events only. From 1972 through 1987 our club enjoyed a yearly fall tour under the leadership of "wagon master" Wally Towne. Most of these were to Bennington, Vt. in September. We also traveled to Wilmington, N.Y. and Chicopee, Mass.
In 1984 and 1987 we toured to Kingston, Ontario. And, in 1986 we enjoyed the AACA National Meet at Lake Placid in September.
For our 30th year we are sponsoring two tours: 47 members enjoyed the Dearborn bus trip June 29, 30 and July 1; our two-day trip to the Finger Lakes Area in our old cars will be held in August.
Our 20th Anniversary picnic held in Franklin Springs in July 1980, was attended by 160 members and guests. In 1985 we celebrated 25 years with a weekend (3-day) old car event at Cazenovia College. A similar event was held in 1988 at Colgate University. In 1986 we toured the Oakville Ontario Assembly plant (a one day bus trip) and, also a one-day bus trip was our visit to Atlantic City in 1987.
This year, we hosted the Perm-Ohio A Ford Club during its tour of Central New York in June. Highlights of this event were the 87 old cars, mostly Model A Fords, parked on the Wampsville Field and the fantastic buffet dinner served by our club to members and guests. Participating were 134 Mohican members and 124 Penn-Ohio members.
SPECIAL EVENTS
20th ANNIVERSARY
Our 20th Anniversary picnic held in Franklin Springs in July 1980, was attended by 160 members and guests. In 1985 we celebrated 25 years with a weekend (3-day) old car event at Cazenovia College.
What you have read so far is really only the bare bones of a 30-year history. Not specifically mentioned but cementing it all together were the many monthly events including picnics, day tours, seminars, Board and committee meetings, mystery runs, auctions, gymkhanas, dinner meetings, business meetings, parades, displays, foliage tours, etc., etc.
The bottom line in the success of any club is the people who belong to it. Our club is blessed with a great number of dedicated members, from 30-year veterans to brand new 1990 enrollees who pitch in to keep the Mohican Model A Ford Club's motor running smoothly.
As we conclude this 30-year history it is our fondest hope that in the year 2000 when someone writes the 40-year history of our club, the next ten years will continue the tradition of the first 30.
THE NEXT 15 YEARS 1991 - 2005
In addition to regular activities such as Board meetings, dinner meetings, seminars, summer tours and picnics, fall foliage tours, etc., our club has sponsored several overnight tours during the past 15 years.
Our video free-loan library continued to expand. Several videos are added each year with a major expansion in 2005 of videos donated by DeVerne Breed and BOCES. The videos are loaned to members free of charge.
Looking to the future we will hold our 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2010 at a location yet to be determined. It is hoped that this will be the biggest and best celebration ever planned by our club. There are also several overnight trips and day trips being planned.
WAMPSVILLE
Our annual car show at Wampsville continues to be one of the premier car events in central New York. Each year an average of 125-150 club members’ and non-members work on this event to make it a success.
During the period from 1990 through 1994 our show averaged 429 flea market spaces, 69 cars for sale, 499 show cars and large numbers of spectators. Rain interfered only in 1990 (in the afternoon). 1991, 92, 93 were blessed with excellent weather. In 1994 it was cloudy and cool but no rain. We have noted one disturbing trend, the car registrations went down each year: 1990 - 546; 1991 - 533; 1992 - 509; 1993 - 480; 1994 - 428. Fortunately in the past few years (2003-2005) car registration has been on the increase.
Major changes to car show:
1991 NYS tax number required for all vendors.
1991 Power and sound cables buried on the Firemen's field.
1991 New raffle ticket price - $1 each.
1991 An aerial picture taken of the show.
1992 "No generators allowed on show field" added to show flyer.
1992 Board voted to continue having show cars judged.
1993 Pre registered cars fee raised to $4.00.
1993 Fee at gate for show cars was raised to $8.00.
1993 Flea market fee for non-auto was raised to $20.00.
1993 A new sound system for our annual Show was purchased.
1994 The firemen proposed installing a fence ($33k in costs) around the field and charging admission. Due to this, the club looked into 6 possible locations to move the show to. It was also suggested that we have a two-day show.
1999 Total raffle prize money was raised to $500
2000 Sold Hemmings calendars at the show for the first time.
2000 Distributed place mats at local restaurants to advertise the car show.
2001 Youngest driver award added to car show.
2002 15 new signs made for car show.
2003 Written agreement with Firemen for use of their field for the show was signed.
2003 The dash plaque will have two members' car on it, the first one a model A and the second one any other classic or antique car.
2004 Started parking modern cars in the empty space in back of the car coral for $3 each.
2004 Changed the fees for pre-registered cars by making two categories: non Judged =$5.00 & judged = $7.00.
During the past 15 years many changes have been made to the way we run the show and how we set up the field in an effort to continue improving the car show. Some of the changes have been in the setup of the show cars field, judging sheets, flow of show cars onto the field, utilizing the unused portion of the car corral for paid public parking, etc.
Over the years many members have work in key positions to help make this the smoothest running car show in central New York. With out everyone’s dedication and hard work we would not have had such a successful show year after year.
MAJOR CHANGES TO THR CAR SHOW 2005-2020
Ray Beebe was Car Show Chairman for 16 years. Bill Kritzler became Chairman in
2015 for 3 years. In 2019 two co-chairs Sal Caruso and Ted Neveldine took over. Judging
for trophies was eliminated at the September 2019 show and replaced with hourly cash prize drawings. Owners are required to be present to collect their prizes. The raffle ticket cash prizes were increased and winners do not have to be present.
CLUB GROWTH
The number of members has slowly increased from the 21 members in 1980 to a high of over 180 members in 2003. In 2004 the numbers dropped due to several factures. We have had members move out of the area, the passing of some members and most significantly we increased the dues to $25. This had a tendency to drive away a few families that we not active.
